Nehru Jackets and Waistcoats for Men in Canada

Ivory men's kurta set with an ornate silver Nehru jacket worn over it

MishUUU |

A Nehru jacket is the piece men buy when a kurta set on its own feels under-dressed for the function and a sherwani feels like too much. It is the middle register of Indian menswear, and in Canada it is also the most practical one, because it is the only part of the outfit you can take off in a warm hall and put back on for photographs.

Most guides treat the jacket as a styling choice. It is not. It is a sizing decision and a function decision, and the two run in opposite directions. This page sets out which is which, read from live stock rather than from a lookbook.

Jacket or waistcoat: the sleeve is the whole question

A Nehru jacket has sleeves and a band collar and sits over the kurta as a genuine third layer. A waistcoat is the same garment without sleeves. Everything that follows comes from that one difference, and it is not mainly about warmth.

With a Nehru jacket, the jacket carries the outfit. It is the outer layer from the wrist up, so the kurta underneath is doing almost no visible work below the collar. A plain kurta under a worked jacket reads as a complete, deliberate outfit.

With a waistcoat, you are buying two garments that both have to be right. The kurta's own sleeve is the outer layer at the arm, so its cuff finish, its sleeve length and any embroidery at the wrist are all on show. A waistcoat over a plain-sleeved kurta can look like a waistcoat someone put on rather than a set.

And here is the selection rule nobody writes down, because it inverts the usual advice to buy the more substantial piece:

If your arm is the awkward measurement, buy the waistcoat. Sleeve length and bicep circumference are the two men's measurements most likely to sit between sizes, and on a Nehru jacket they are the hardest to fix — a cuff on a worked sleeve cannot be shortened without cutting into the work, and a bicep cannot be let out at all once the armhole is embroidered. A waistcoat removes both measurements from the decision entirely. It is the easier garment to buy correctly, not the lesser one.

The reverse case: if your chest and arm are straightforward and you want one piece to do the work, the jacket is the better buy, because it covers more of what can go wrong underneath.

The band collar is the measurement people skip

A Nehru collar — the bandh gala, the closed neck — stands upright and fastens at the throat. Two consequences, both practical.

First, it takes no tie. There is nowhere for one to go. A man who reaches for a tie when he dresses formally has nothing to reach for here, and the collar itself is the entire neckline. That is usually a relief, but it means the collar is carrying a job a shirt collar and a tie would normally share.

Second, a band collar cannot be let out. On a turndown collar a tailor has a seam and a point to work with. A band collar is a finished strip, usually faced and often worked, and opening it means rebuilding it. If it gapes at the throat it is the only thing visible in every photograph taken from the chest up, and if it is tight you will unfasten it by the second hour and lose the line of the garment.

So measure the neck, not just the chest. Our measuring guide covers where to hold the tape, and alterations in Toronto and Brampton sets out what a local tailor will and will not take on.

What is on the rail, counted

Twelve layered men's pieces are live right now, against fifty men's pieces in total. Read from live stock:

Across the wider men's range, forty-six of the forty-eight kurta sets sit under $150, so the layered pieces are not a separate price tier — a jacket set costs roughly what a worked kurta set costs. The unlayered end runs from the Charcoal Black Antique Gold Floral Kurta Set and the Deep Forest Green Tonal Men's Kurta Set at $105 upward, and the full rail is the Men's Wear collection.

The stock depth is the opposite of the women's rail, and it matters

This is the detail worth the whole page, and it is specific to this catalogue rather than general advice.

Women's occasion wear here is bought in small runs — typically one unit per size. If the size showing online sells, there is no second one behind it. Every guide on this site says so, because it is the single most important fact about buying womenswear here.

Menswear is stocked three deep per size. The Nehru jacket sets carry eighteen units across six sizes, XS to 2XL; the waistcoat sets carry fifteen across five, XS to XL. That is three of each size rather than one.

Two things follow. First, a men's piece is far less likely to vanish between browsing and deciding, so the urgency that governs womenswear buying here does not apply in the same way. Second, and more usefully: a group order is actually possible on this rail. Three groomsmen in the same Nehru jacket set in three different sizes is ordinary stock; three bridesmaids in the same lehenga is not. If you are co-ordinating a wedding party, that asymmetry decides which side of the party you can match and which side you can only co-ordinate by colour. Indian groomsmen outfits in Canada works through that, and matching outfits for couples covers the two-person version.

Check the size selector on the piece before you count on it — three per size is what the current waves carry, not a guarantee — but it is a materially different buying situation from the women's rail, and nobody says so.

Sizes, and where the range actually runs

Every Nehru jacket set on the rail runs XS to 2XL. The waistcoat sets and the long waistcoat run XS to XL. Across the whole men's range, thirty-seven of the forty-eight kurta sets carry a 2XL, which is a far higher proportion than the women's rails manage.

What the chart will not tell you is which of the three men's measurements is binding. Chest is the one everyone gives; sleeve length and neck are the two that decide whether the jacket looks made for you. If the three numbers do not land in the same size band, that is the case for custom sizing rather than for buying the larger one and having it taken in, because taking in a worked jacket at the side seam moves the pocket line.

Function by function, through a Canadian wedding season

Mehendi, haldi and daytime functions

Waistcoat, or no layer at all. These functions are warm, often seated, frequently involve food and colour on the hands, and a sleeved jacket is a layer you will take off in the first twenty minutes and then carry. A lighter printed or tonal kurta set does the job; haldi outfits and sangeet and mehendi outfits go function by function.

The ceremony

Nehru jacket. A closed collar and a full sleeve are correct in a gurdwara, a mandir or a mosque hall without anything being added, and the jacket is the piece that makes a kurta set read as ceremony dress rather than as a shirt. What to wear to a gurdwara or mandir covers the head-covering question separately.

Reception

The bandhgala, or the darkest, most densely worked jacket on the rail. A reception is an evening room with hard lighting, and this is the one function where a heavier jacket is not too much. It is also the function where a waistcoat is the weakest choice, because the room is dressed up and the kurta sleeve is doing the talking.

Father of the groom, father of the bride, uncles

A waistcoat set, almost always, and for a reason that has nothing to do with taste: these are the people who will be standing for six hours, greeting, moving between rooms and going outside repeatedly. A sleeveless layer stays on through all of it. Father of the bride outfits in Canada covers the rest.

The coat problem, and the one real advantage of layering

Between November and February a Canadian function means a winter coat over the outfit for the walk from the car, and most Indian menswear advice stops at "wear a coat".

The specific failure on this garment: a Nehru jacket is already a structured layer with a standing collar, and a coat collar over a standing collar either pushes it flat or pushes it up into your neck. Neither recovers in the walk across a parking lot, and a crushed band collar is the one part of the outfit everyone photographs.

The answer is the thing only a layered outfit allows: wear the kurta under the coat and carry the jacket in. Put it on inside. A man in a single heavily embroidered kurta has no equivalent move — whatever the coat does to the shoulder of that kurta is what he is wearing all evening. This is the practical argument for the jacket set over the worked single kurta in a Canadian winter, and it is the opposite of the argument you would make in Delhi. Indian winter wedding outfits in Canada covers the footwear and slush side of the same evening.

What this rail does not have

Being plain about it: there is no sherwani range here. Two pieces in the catalogue are typed as sherwani, and one of them is the bandhgala jacket above. A groom looking for a full-length embroidered sherwani with a churidar is not served by this rail and should not be told otherwise. What this rail does well is the guest, the groomsman, the brother and the father — the twelve layered pieces above, plus thirty-eight unlayered kurta sets, almost all under $150.

Nor is there a dedicated range of men's stoles or safas. If the function calls for one, plan to source it separately.

Trying one on, and sending three numbers instead

The Brampton store is at 2575 Steeles Avenue East, Unit 9, open 11:00 to 20:00 seven days a week, and the men's rail is on the floor. On this garment specifically the visit is worth it for two things only: the collar at the throat and the sleeve at the wrist. Everything else about a Nehru jacket is forgiving.

If the drive is not practical, the faster route is to send chest, sleeve length and neck, plus the piece you are looking at, on WhatsApp to +1 437-473-4173 and be told which size to take. It is a two-minute exchange and it settles the only questions that matter here. Men's Indian clothes in Brampton and the GTA has the local detail, and Indian wedding outfits for men in Toronto is the regional version.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between a Nehru jacket and a bandhgala?

Both have the standing band collar. A Nehru jacket is shorter, usually hip-length, worn open or buttoned over a kurta, and sold here as part of a kurta set. A bandhgala is a longer, fully closed jacket cut with trousers rather than a kurta, and it is the more formal of the two. On this rail there is one bandhgala and seven Nehru jacket sets.

Can a Nehru jacket be worn without the kurta?

Over a plain shirt, yes, and it is a common way to wear one to a non-Indian event. The band collar does the work; the shirt should have no collar showing above it, which in practice means a mandarin-collar shirt or a plain crew neck rather than a dress shirt.

Do you wear a tie with a Nehru collar?

No. The collar closes at the throat and there is nowhere for a tie to sit. A brooch at the collar or on the chest is the convention instead, and one of the waistcoat sets here is sold with one.

How much does a Nehru jacket set cost in Canada?

On this rail, $105 to $210, with most of the layered pieces at $125 to $135. Across the whole men's range, forty-six of forty-eight kurta sets are under $150. Prices are in Canadian dollars, and domestic shipping is free above CAD $125, which covers most of the rail.

Can a Nehru jacket be altered?

The trouser hem and the kurta hem, yes, easily. The jacket's sleeve and bicep, usually not, because the work runs into the cuff and the armhole. The band collar, no. Buy to the neck and the sleeve, or order a custom size.

What sizes do the men's jackets come in?

Every Nehru jacket set on the rail runs XS to 2XL; the waistcoat sets run XS to XL. Thirty-seven of the forty-eight men's kurta sets carry a 2XL. The size selector on the individual product page is the authority.

Can I order the same jacket for several groomsmen?

Usually yes, and this is the one place the men's rail beats the women's. The current waves carry roughly three units per size rather than one, so the same piece in three or four sizes is ordinary stock. Confirm against the size selector before committing a group, and call the store if the order is larger than that.
