A nikah and a walima are two different events with two different dress codes, and in Canada they are often two different weekends as well. Most outfit guides collapse them into one "Pakistani wedding" paragraph. This one does not, because the practical questions are not the same: what you wear to sit on a carpeted floor for a twenty-minute ceremony is not what you wear to a banquet hall in Mississauga four hours later.
The nikah and the walima are not the same outfit
The nikah is the marriage contract. It is short — often fifteen to thirty minutes — and it is frequently held at a mosque, a community hall or a family home. There is a khutbah, the consent, the signing of the nikahnama, and then duas. The walima is the reception hosted by the groom's family afterwards, and it behaves like any other large wedding dinner: a hall, a stage, a receiving line, several hundred people and a long evening.
In Pakistan the two are usually a day or two apart. In Canada they are frequently split further, because halls, imams and out-of-town family all have to line up. A nikah in October and a walima in February is not unusual here. If that is your situation, you are buying two outfits with months between them rather than one wardrobe, and the second one should be chosen for the season it actually falls in.
What guests wear to a nikah
Dress modestly and assume you will be on the floor. Most nikahs in the GTA are held in a prayer hall or a carpeted room where shoes come off at the door, seating is on the floor or on low chairs, and you will stand, sit and kneel more than once. Three things follow from that.
- Trousers beat a skirt. A gharara, a sharara or a straight salwar set lets you fold your legs without arranging anything. A pre-draped saree with a fixed floor-length hem does not.
- Your hem meets the floor, not your shoes. If you take your shoes off at the door, a hem set for three-inch heels drags for the entire ceremony. Have it set for flats, or wear flats.
- Sleeves and a dupatta you can actually keep up. A dupatta that slides off every time you move is a twenty-minute distraction during the one part of the day that is not photographable twice.

The signing is done seated at a low table, and the photographer shoots it from above and slightly behind. It produces the single most-shared image of the whole nikah, and in it you see roughly three things: hands, the paper, and a neckline with a sleeve. Nothing below the waist appears at all.
That is worth knowing before you buy. If you are the bride, or a mother, or a sister who will be leaning into that frame, the money is better spent on the yoke, the neckline and the sleeve hem than on the skirt. Colour, and the arguments about it

Walima: the outfit that can be heavier
The walima is a seated dinner in a hall. You are not on the floor, you are not taking your shoes off, and you will be photographed standing on a stage. This is where a heavier piece earns its keep.
