Buying Indian Clothes in Abbotsford and the Fraser Valley

Dusty turquoise sharara set with antique gold geometric embroidery

MishUUU |

Most pages like this one begin by telling you there is nowhere good to shop locally. That would be nonsense here. Abbotsford and the wider Fraser Valley have one of the highest concentrations of Punjabi households in the country, and the clothing retail has followed: South Fraser Way and the surrounding blocks carry more traditional Indian clothing per capita than almost anywhere else in Canada, and Surrey is forty minutes down Highway 1 if the Valley does not have it.

So this is not a page arguing that you should order instead of shopping locally. It is an honest account of what the Valley does better than any website, what it tends not to carry, and two things about Fraser Valley weather that change which garment you should buy.

What the Valley does better than any website

Four categories are genuinely better bought in person here, and we would rather say so:

  • Unstitched suit fabric. If you buy by the metre and have it made up, you need to handle the cloth and see it in daylight. No photograph settles that.
  • Heavy traditional Punjabi work. Phulkari, thick gota, bridal-weight salwar suits. The Valley's tailoring-led shops carry real depth here.
  • Anything needing fittings. A bridal commission wants a room and a tailor, not a courier.
  • Anything needed this week. Abbotsford is roughly 3,500 kilometres from our Ontario stock. Transit is several days, not overnight.

What the Valley carries less of is the contemporary register: pre-draped pieces, indo-western cuts, and the muted colour family that has taken over occasion wear in the last few seasons. Tailoring-led shops stock what sells reliably, and in a market with deep traditional demand that means traditional stock. If you want a Dusty Lilac Silver Floral Jewel Draped Saree Set at CAD $165 or a Moss Olive Silver Floral Jacket Gown Set at $110, you will spend a Saturday looking for it locally and may not find it.

British Columbia pays less tax on this than Ontario does

Canadian sales tax follows the delivery address, not the seller's. A Fraser Valley address pays 12% — 5% GST plus 7% provincial sales tax, which does apply to adult clothing in BC. An Ontario address on the identical order pays 13%.

On real prices that is small but real. A $165 sharara lands at $184.80 delivered to Abbotsford and $186.45 to Toronto. A $265 order is $296.80 against $299.45. Across three outfits for a wedding season it is roughly eight dollars. Not a reason to do anything differently, but worth knowing if someone tells you that shopping from an Ontario store costs you extra. It does not; you pay your own province's rate. A Quebec buyer, by contrast, pays 14.975%, which we worked through on the Montreal page.

Free shipping begins at CAD $125 on the pre-tax subtotal, and the threshold is read the same way from every province.

The Valley's winter is wet, not frozen, and that changes the hem

This is the part a national guide will not tell you, because it is wrong everywhere else in Canada. Ottawa, Winnipeg and Calgary damage occasion wear with road salt and grit. The Fraser Valley does neither in most winters. What it has instead is sustained rain and permanently wet ground from November through March, and that attacks a garment by a completely different mechanism.

Wet pavement wicks. A floor-length georgette or net hem that touches a wet surface will draw water up the fabric by capillary action — six to eight inches in a short walk across a car park is normal, and the fabric stays heavy and dark for the rest of the evening. On silk-look synthetics the water does not simply dry out either; it dries with a visible tide line along the wick height, which needs cleaning rather than airing.

Two things follow. First, hem higher here than you would in Toronto: clear the ground by a full inch rather than half, measured on the shoes you will actually walk in. Second, prefer a lined skirt over unlined net. A lined pre-draped skirt set wicks at the lining edge and the outer fabric stays dry; an unlined net lehenga wicks the whole panel. The Midnight Navy Antique Gold Lattice Palazzo Set at $165 sidesteps the problem entirely, because a trouser hem sits above the ground by design.

There is a storage consequence too. Valley humidity sits high through winter, and a heavily embellished piece sealed in a plastic garment sleeve will mildew at the fold lines. Use a breathable cotton garment bag, and do not store an outfit damp after a rainy function, however late it is.

What is worth ordering rather than driving for

The register that travels well is the one that arrives finished. A Dusty Turquoise Antique Gold Geometric Sharara Set at $165 and a Dusty Sage Green Antique Gold Heritage Anarkali Set at $135 arrive as complete outfits with nothing left to do to them. A Champagne Ivory Rani Pink Gold Floral A-Line Kurta Set at $135 and a Rani Pink Silver Floral Jewel Embroidered Palazzo Set at $105 cover the daytime functions.

For men, the jacketed kurta is the piece worth ordering, because it is the shape the Valley's traditional shops stock least: a Pearl Ivory Silver Mirror Work Nehru Jacket Kurta Set at $125 reads formal beside a dark suit and layers for a cold gurdwara hall. The full menswear range runs to around forty-five pieces and is growing.

By category: shalwar kameez, sharara suits, sarees including the pre-draped range, indo-western and lehengas. If you are closer to Surrey or Vancouver, the Surrey and Vancouver page covers that side of the Lower Mainland.

Sizes, custom sizing and the distance problem

Standard sizing runs XS to 2XL on most womenswear and XS to 3XL on menswear, and custom sizing is available. From the Fraser Valley the case for sending measurements before ordering is stronger than almost anywhere else in the country, for one reason: a size swap means a parcel each way across the full width of Canada, which is a week or more before the replacement even ships.

So take the numbers first. Read the measuring guide, use a soft tape against a fitted layer, and check against the size chart. Between sizes, size up and have a local tailor take it in; the Valley has no shortage of good ones, and taking a seam in is straightforward where letting one out usually is not. The custom sizing page explains what we need.

One clause to read before ordering: pre-draped sarees are non-returnable, which is exactly the category worth ordering from out of province. That is the nature of a pre-stitched drape rather than a catch, but it does mean measurements are not optional there. The pre-draped saree page and the return policy both set out what applies.

Abbotsford and the Fraser Valley: common questions

Do you have a shop in Abbotsford?

No. The only shop floor is in Brampton, Ontario, at 2575 Steeles Avenue East, Unit 9, open 11:00 to 20:00 seven days a week. Everything reaching BC is mail order, and we would rather say so plainly.

How long does delivery to Abbotsford, Mission or Chilliwack take?

Several business days from dispatch rather than the one or two an Ontario address sees. Order earlier than an Ontario buyer would for the same function, particularly in December.

Is it cheaper to buy in Abbotsford or order online?

For unstitched fabric, heavy traditional Punjabi work or anything needing fittings, buy locally. For contemporary and pre-draped pieces the local rail rarely carries, ordering is cheaper than a day of driving and usually finds the thing.

Do I pay Ontario tax if the store is in Ontario?

No. Sales tax follows the delivery address. A BC address pays 12% — 5% GST and 7% PST — which is a point less than an Ontario address pays on the same order.

What should I avoid buying for a Fraser Valley winter?

An unlined net or georgette floor-length skirt, unless you can keep it off wet ground entirely. Wet pavement wicks several inches up the panel and dries with a tide line. A lined skirt or a palazzo set avoids it.

How should I store an embellished outfit here?

In a breathable cotton garment bag, never sealed plastic, and never damp. Valley humidity through the winter will mildew a folded embellished panel inside a sealed sleeve.

Can I get something altered locally after it arrives?

Yes, and the Valley has plenty of experienced tailors. Be aware most work from the garment in front of them rather than from Indian sizing blocks, which is why taking a piece in is simple and letting it out usually is not.
