December in the Greater Toronto Area is party season in a way that has nothing to do with weddings. The office holiday party, a friend's Christmas dinner, a family get-together over the long weekend, a New Year's Eve booking at a banquet hall in Mississauga or a restaurant downtown. Each comes with a dress code written for Western clothes, and each is a perfectly good occasion for Indian and Pakistani party wear, provided the piece is chosen for how the evening actually runs.

Translating the dress code on the invitation
The hardest part of wearing ethnic wear to a Canadian party is not the outfit, it is the dress code line, because it was written with a suit and a knee-length dress in mind. Read it as a statement about formality, not about garment type, and it converts cleanly.

One rule overrides the table at a work party: the most senior person in the room sets the ceiling, not the invitation. If the dress code says cocktail and you would be the only one in a lehenga, you have misread the room even though you have read the card correctly.
The detail nobody plans for: a plate, a glass and a dupatta
Most December parties are not seated dinners. They are standing receptions with passed food, a bar and nowhere to put anything down. The second column matters because there are no direct exchanges. A wrong size means a return within seven days of delivery, unworn and tagged, for store credit, followed by a new order, which realistically takes two to three weeks. Getting there in a Toronto December
Two practical points specific to the city. First, a party downtown usually means transit or a ride-share and a walk, so a floor-length hem will meet slush.
