What to Wear to a Mayoon in Canada

Yellow kurta set with floral embroidery, the traditional colour for a mayoon

MishUUU |

A mayoon is the function nobody buys for properly. The baraat outfit is chosen months ahead, the mehndi outfit gets a fitting, and then the mayoon is thrown together out of whatever is left in the cupboard — which is how a good lawn kurta ends up permanently turmeric-coloured down one sleeve.

This is a guide to what actually works, written for a mayoon held in Canada rather than in Lahore or Karachi, because the two are not the same event in practice.

What a mayoon is, and why it is not a haldi

Mayoon — also written mayun or maiyun — is a Pakistani pre-wedding tradition on the bride's side. Traditionally the bride withdraws from the household and from going out for a period before the wedding, during which ubtan is applied to her: a paste of turmeric, gram flour, sandalwood and cream or rosewater. In most families now that long seclusion has compressed into one function, usually with a dholki, usually at home or in a hall, and usually yellow.

It is close to a haldi, and it is not the same thing. A haldi is the turmeric ceremony at Hindu and Punjabi weddings, where the paste is applied by both families and frequently to both the bride and groom together. A mayoon is specific to the bride, sits inside a longer Pakistani sequence that runs through mehndi, nikah and walima, and carries the seclusion idea that a haldi does not. If you are dressing for a haldi rather than a mayoon, the haldi outfit guide is the one to read; if the function is a mehndi, the sangeet and mehndi guide covers it, and nikah and walima are their own problem entirely.

The reason yellow is traditional is also the reason it is practical

Yellow is read as auspicious, and that is the explanation every guide gives. Here is the other one.

Turmeric does not come out. It is a dye. On white, on ivory, on pale pink, on any pale synthetic, a smear of ubtan is permanent — it will fade towards a dirty ochre and stay there. It does not lift from silk at all, and a dry cleaner will tell you so after they have tried. Yellow is the one colour on which turmeric is invisible, and deep gold, mustard, marigold and lime are close enough to hide it.

So the rule is simple and nobody writes it down: for the function where paste is going on your hands, arms and face, wear a colour at least as deep as the paste, in a fabric that can be washed. Save the ivory for the walima.

What that rules in

Cotton, lawn, georgette and light silk-blends in the yellow family, lightly worked rather than densely embellished. The Yellow Blossom Embroidered Set at $120 is the straightforward version of this, and the Mustard Yellow Farshi Salwar Set at $110 is the cheapest sensible one in the range. For a slightly dressier mayoon — the kind held in a hall with a stage — the Mustard Zari Embroidered Palazzo Set and the Mustard Mirror Cape Palazzo Set are both $135, and the Sunshine Yellow Handcrafted Palazzo Set is $140.

What it rules out

Dense zardozi, heavy gota kinari and anything with a lot of thread standing proud of the surface. Not because it looks wrong — it looks very good — but because ubtan is oily, oil wicks into raised thread, and embellished occasion wear is dry-clean-only precisely where dry cleaning cannot reach. A heavily worked piece worn to a mayoon is a piece you have spent and will not wear again. If you want the embellishment, wear it at the mehndi and keep the mayoon outfit light. The full yellow range is in Haldi Ka Rang and Yellow, and the broader bride's-side edit is Mayoon.

You will be sitting on the floor

Mayoon and dholki are floor events. There are chowkis, there are sheets, there are cushions against a wall, and you will be on them for two or three hours while the dholak goes. This decides more than the colour does.

  • A gharara is the hardest thing to sit cross-legged in. The flare is cut from the knee and it does not fold; you end up kneeling or sitting sideways for the whole function. A sharara, a palazzo or a plain salwar all fold. The Mustard Gold Embroidered Sharara Suit Set and the Mustard Gold Embroidered Luxe Sharara Set are both $135 and both do fold; the sharara and kurta and suit set collections go deeper, and buying a sharara suit in Canada covers the cut in detail.
  • An unlined hem picks up everything off a sheet. Floor coverings at a home function collect rose petals, ubtan, mehndi crumbs and whatever has been walked in. A lined or heavier hem shakes out. An unlined chiffon one does not.
  • Check the hem barefoot. Shoes come off. An outfit hemmed to the height of the heels you intended to wear will be under your feet all evening.

The part that is specific to a Canadian mayoon

Here is the thing that catches people out, and it is not in any guide written in Pakistan.

A mayoon in Ontario is almost always indoors — a basement, a living room, a banquet hall — and the Pakistani wedding calendar here runs heaviest from November through February. So the function itself is warm. But the photographs are frequently staged outside: marigolds against snow, daylight on a driveway, the whole family on the front steps. That is fifteen to twenty minutes outdoors in a short-sleeved lawn kurta in January, and it shows in the pictures — the shoulders go up, the arms fold, and everybody looks cold because everybody is cold.

Two practical answers. Either take a layer you can remove at the door — a light jacket or a shawl that reads as part of the outfit rather than as outerwear — or choose a mayoon piece in a warmer fabric to begin with. A velvet suit set is the unexpectedly correct answer for a December or January mayoon: the Mustard Gold Velvet Floral Suit Set at $120 is yellow, warm, and velvet brushes clean rather than absorbing, which is more than can be said for raised thread. The winter wedding guide has the rest of the cold-weather detail.

The dupatta will slide, and it is not your pinning

Ubtan goes on the hair as well, and so does oil. A dupatta pinned into oiled hair has nothing to grip and will work itself loose within the hour, which is why half the mayoon photographs in any family album show somebody mid-adjustment. Pin it to the shoulder seam of the kurta instead, in two places rather than one, and let the hair do nothing. A cotton or chiffon dupatta with a woven border holds better than a plain georgette one, which has no weight to sit against.

If you are a guest rather than the bride

Yellow is the bride's colour for the day and most families will not mind guests wearing it, but if you would rather not match, green is the traditional alternative and reads correctly at a mayoon. The Lime Green Handcrafted Palazzo Set with Statement Crop Top is $150, and the Golden Citrine Cape Set at $120 sits between the two. Keep it lighter than the bride's — a guest in heavy bridal-weight work at a mayoon reads as a misjudgement, not as generosity. The Mehndi and under $195 edits are the useful places to look.

Sizing, alterations and timing

Sizes here run 3XS to XL with custom sizing and alterations available on request. Two things worth knowing before you order rather than after. Mayoon outfits are often ordered last because they feel like the least important item, and that is exactly when a hem or a sleeve adjustment collides with the wedding date — allow a week or two for alterations on top of shipping. And a customised piece is not returnable, so ask before ordering: the measuring guide and the notes on custom sizing in Canada cover how to take the measurements, and the return policy sets out the terms.

If you are in the Greater Toronto Area, the Brampton store is the shortcut: you can be measured in person, and a mayoon outfit is the one piece where seeing how a fabric behaves when you sit down matters more than how it photographs standing up. There is more on shopping locally in Pakistani wedding clothes in Brampton and buying Pakistani clothes in Canada.

Questions people actually ask

Does the mayoon outfit have to be yellow?

No, but it is the convention and it is the sensible choice. Green is the usual alternative, and deep gold, mustard and marigold all read correctly. The colours to avoid are white, ivory and pale pastels — not for superstition, but because turmeric will not come out of them.

What is the difference between a mayoon and a mehndi?

Mayoon is the ubtan function on the bride's side, traditionally marking the start of her seclusion before the wedding. Mehndi is the henna function, usually a separate and larger event with both families. Many Canadian families now combine them into one evening, in which case dress for the mehndi and accept that ubtan may happen.

Can a guest wear yellow to a mayoon?

Usually yes — unlike a bridal red, yellow at a mayoon is a shared colour rather than the bride's alone. If you are close family it is worth asking, because some families coordinate the whole room in one shade and would rather you knew in advance.

What should the groom wear to his own mayoon function?

Where the groom has an equivalent ubtan function, the convention is the same: a light kurta in yellow or ivory that can be washed, not an embroidered sherwani. The men's wear collection carries kurta sets at the lighter end, and the kurta pajama guide covers fit.

How far in advance should I order?

Four to six weeks before the function if alterations are likely, which for a kurta length or a salwar hem they usually are. Cross-border delivery slows down through the festive and wedding season, and the mayoon tends to be the first function in the sequence, so it is the one with the least slack.

Is a heavy embellished outfit ever right for a mayoon?

At a hall mayoon with a stage and no ubtan actually being applied, yes. At a home mayoon with a thali of paste going round the room, no — not because it looks wrong but because you will not get it clean afterwards, and that is a decision about the next five years of the garment rather than about one evening.
