Vaisakhi falls on Wednesday 14 April 2027. In Canada the day itself is usually the smaller part of it: the nagar kirtan processions and Khalsa Day parades are held on the nearest weekend, and in Brampton, Malton, Surrey and Vancouver they draw crowds that dwarf the calendar date. Surrey's Khalsa Day parade alone reported over 450,000 people in 2026, which makes it the largest Vaisakhi gathering in the country and arguably anywhere.
That is worth saying at the top because it changes what you should be dressing for. Most Vaisakhi outfit advice assumes a gurdwara visit and a meal. In Canada it is more often a gurdwara visit, a meal, and several kilometres of walking outdoors in April. Those three things want different clothes, and the garment that handles all three is not the one most people reach for.
The thing nobody writes about a Canadian nagar kirtan
The procession is walked barefoot. The Guru Granth Sahib travels on the float, and out of respect for it the sangat walks shoeless behind and alongside — which in mid-April in Ontario or the Lower Mainland means wet asphalt, grit, road salt residue that has not yet been washed away by spring rain, and temperatures that are frequently in single digits.
The consequence for what you wear is direct and almost never mentioned: whatever you wear to the nagar kirtan will get its hem wrecked. Not marked — wrecked. A floor-length hem dragging on cold wet road picks up water by capillary action several inches up the fabric, and on a pale or embroidered hem that water carries grit into the thread. It dries as a tidemark that does not come out.
So the shape that works for the procession is one that ends at or above the ankle, in a fabric and colour that can take a wash: a salwar or churidar with the kameez at knee or mid-calf, or a palazzo set you are willing to have cleaned afterwards. The heavy floor-length piece belongs to the gurdwara or the evening, not the walk. Most families solve this by changing once during the day, and it is worth planning for rather than discovering.
The corollary applies to feet. You will be carrying your shoes or leaving them, so bring something you can walk in and do not mind losing sight of for two hours. Embroidered juttis on wet road are a single-use decision.
The dupatta is load-bearing, not styling
Heads are covered in the gurdwara, and the dupatta is what covers yours. That turns a decorative item into a functional one, and it rules out a whole category of dupatta that looks beautiful on a hanger.
A net or organza dupatta will not stay on a head. It has no weight and nothing to grip with, so it slides continuously and you will spend the darbar re-settling it rather than sitting still. What stays put is a dupatta with weight at the edges — a border, a zari edging, a tassel run — over a fabric with some drag to it: cotton-silk, chanderi, a substantial chiffon, a georgette that has been finished with a proper border. If you are buying a set specifically for Vaisakhi, hold the dupatta over your own head in the fitting room before you decide. It takes ten seconds and it is the difference between a comfortable two hours and a fidgety one.

Langar is served on the floor
Langar is eaten seated in rows on the floor, for as long as it takes, and it is served to everybody. That is a second constraint the outfit has to satisfy: you need to be able to sit cross-legged, get up, and do it again, without the garment fighting you.
A salwar, churidar, palazzo or sharara handles this without thought. A fitted straight skirt, a mermaid cut, or a heavily structured lehenga does not, and a stiff crinoline underskirt is actively uncomfortable on a floor. Colour, honestly
Saffron and deep blue carry particular meaning in Sikh tradition, and you will see a great deal of both — saffron especially, on turbans, on chunnis and on the sangat generally. Basanti yellow, marigold, orange and bright pink all read as festival colours and all sit comfortably in the day.
Nothing is prohibited, and treating this as a rulebook is the wrong instinct. The two practical notes worth having are that white shows April road spray immediately, and that very pale ivory against a saffron crowd photographs as a gap rather than a garment. If you want a neutral, a warm one holds up better than a cool one.

April in Canada is not April in Punjab
Mid-April in Brampton runs roughly 5 to 14 degrees with a real chance of rain, and in the Lower Mainland it is milder but wetter. Punjab in April is already into the high twenties. Every photograph of Vaisakhi dressing you will find online was taken in the second climate.
What follows: a single layer of georgette or chanderi is not enough for three hours outdoors, and the shawl you are carrying is styling rather than insulation. The workable answer is a full-sleeve kurta, a substantial dupatta, and a layer underneath rather than over — over crushes the dupatta drape and the shoulder work, which is where the embroidery usually is. If it rains, embroidery and zari should be patted dry rather than rubbed, and dried flat and away from a radiator; direct heat on wet metallic thread is what dulls it.
Menswear

Four weeks before the date is comfortable for a standard size. Eight weeks if anything needs altering, because GTA tailors are busy in that window too.
