Durham Region has the longest effective trip to an Indian occasion-wear rail of anywhere in the Greater Toronto Area, and the reason is geography rather than distance. Oshawa to Brampton is about 89 km by road — less than the drive from Kitchener — but the route runs around or through Toronto, and that is the part that varies by two hours depending on when you leave.
So this page is about the trip and the alternative to it, written from the shipping and return terms rather than from general advice. Ajax, Pickering, Whitby, Oshawa, Courtice and Bowmanville all sit on the same side of the same problem.
The toll detail that catches people out
Highway 407 across Durham is free, and most drivers now assume the 407 is free. It is not, and the boundary is worth knowing before you are on it.
- Highways 412 and 418, the Durham connectors, became toll-free on 5 April 2022.
- Highway 407 East — the provincially owned 43.4 km from Brock Road in Pickering east to Highway 35/115 in Clarington — became toll-free on 1 June 2025.
- West of Brock Road, the road is the privately operated 407 ETR, and it is still tolled all the way to Burlington.
Which means a Durham driver heading west to Brampton gets the free stretch first and then starts paying at exactly the point the journey turns into the long part. The toll-free section is the half you were not going to be charged much for anyway; the charged section is the 60-odd kilometres across the top of Toronto. A transponder-less trip is billed by camera with a per-trip charge added, and the 2026 personal transponder lease is $31.50 plus tax a year — worth it for a commuter, not for one shopping run. We are deliberately not quoting a per-kilometre rate here, because the published tables are sectional and time-of-day dependent and any figure would go stale; 407etr.com has the current ones.
The free alternative is the 401 through Toronto, which costs nothing and spends the saving on time. Neither is wrong. The point is that "the 407 is free now" is true in Durham and false for the part of the drive that matters.
What the parcel costs instead
From the shipping policy: standard delivery within Canada is CAD $25 and free above CAD $125, four to six business days, after one to two business days of processing. Express is CAD $29.99 flat, three to five business days.
Read live from the catalogue today, 622 of 741 active pieces are priced at $125 or above, so for 84% of the rail the parcel arrives free. Against a drive that costs either a toll or two hours, that is a strong default, and it makes the Durham decision simpler than the Hamilton or Kitchener one: order unless the garment's fit cannot be settled by a measurement.
The 75% line in the delivery terms
Here is the detail that matters more in Durham than anywhere else, and we have not seen another retailer write it down. The terms state that refusing a delivery without prior notice incurs a 75% restocking fee, deducted from the refund. Not the shipping cost — three quarters of the order.
That rule is aimed at nobody in particular and lands squarely on a commuter. A Durham household where both adults are in Toronto between seven and seven is the most likely in the region to miss a courier, and the instinct when a parcel finally turns up at an awkward moment — or when you have already decided the piece is wrong — is to send it back with the driver. Doing that converts a $155 order into a $38.75 credit. Accept the parcel, always, and use the returns process instead, which is seven days, unworn and tagged, for store credit. If a delivery attempt is missed the courier leaves a notice or tries again; arranging redelivery costs nothing. The only expensive move is the one that feels like the quick one.
Two practical consequences. Ship to a workplace rather than a house if the house is empty on weekdays. And open the box the day it arrives, because a missing item has to be reported within 24 hours and a fault within 48 — a parcel left sealed until the morning of the function closes both windows.
What to order, and what not to
The dividing line is the return policy. Refunds are store credit rather than card refunds, return postage is yours, and there are no direct exchanges, so a size swap is a return, an inspection, a credit and a fresh order — two to three weeks. Four categories cannot be returned at all: pre-draped sarees, sarees with a stitched blouse, bridal wear and anything customised.
Safe to order from Durham
Palazzo sets, shararas and kurta sets are drawn or elasticated at the waist, with the flare beginning below the point where fit is decided. Three to five centimetres are absorbed by the garment, and the only real risk is the kurta shoulder.
- Moss Olive Multicolor Jewel Palazzo Set at $135 and Deep Plum Silver Jewel Palazzo Set at $135.
- Deep Teal Multicolor Jewel Sharara Set at $145 and Silver Sage Gold Embroidered Sharara Couture Ensemble at $145.
- Ice Mint Teal Jewel Kurta Set at $135 and Fuchsia Gold Jewel Kurta Set at $135.
The rails are Shalwar Kameez, Sharara and Kurta Suit Sets; the numbers are on the size chart, and how to measure yourself for Indian occasion wear covers taking them properly.
Worth the drive
A fitted choli, a corset bodice and a pre-draped skirt are decided by where the darts, boning and waist seam fall relative to your own body, not by a circumference. Two people with the same bust measurement carry that fullness at different heights, and when the apex lands wrong the bodice wrinkles diagonally from the underarm toward the centre front — a vertical problem that taking in the sides does not solve.
- Deep Wine Jewel Draped Skirt Set at $145 and Black Crystal Cape Skirt Set at $145 — a sculpted blouse decides both.
- Smoky Bronze Crystal Draped Saree Set at $135 — the pleats and pallu are set at manufacture.
More in Regal Lehengas and Drapes and Saree. Buying a lehenga in Canada and corset lehengas in Canada both cover why the bodice is the decision.
If you do come, come in the evening
The Brampton store at 2575 Steeles Avenue East, Unit 9 is open 11:00 to 20:00, seven days a week, and for a Durham buyer that is the whole of the planning. Leaving Whitby at four on a Thursday and leaving at six on a Sunday are different journeys on the same road. Bring the shoes you intend to wear, since on a floor-length piece the hem is set against a heel height and nothing else, and buy in the room if a piece fits — most styles are held at one unit per size.
Refunds are not processed at the store, so the visit is for fitting and buying rather than returning. If you are crossing Toronto anyway, Scarborough is on the way and worth reading first, and where to buy Indian clothes in Toronto and the GTA covers the belt as a whole.
On shops in Durham, said plainly
Indian and Pakistani occasion-wear retail in Ontario is concentrated in the Brampton, Malton and north Mississauga belt. That is a statement about where the rails sit, not a claim about Durham, which has South Asian grocers, jewellers and tailors of its own. A tailor in particular is worth finding locally, because an alteration does not have to happen where the garment was bought — and a reduction is straightforward while an increase above XL is close to impossible, which is the reason to order the larger size and take it in. We make no claim here about specific shops in Ajax, Pickering, Whitby or Oshawa, because it is not something we can verify from here.
Questions people ask
Is there an Indian clothing store in Oshawa or Whitby?
Durham has South Asian retailers and tailors, and the deep occasion-wear rails are concentrated west of Toronto in the Brampton and Mississauga area. Our store is in Brampton, about 89 km from Oshawa, and standard delivery across Canada is free above $125.
How long does delivery take to Durham Region?
Four to six business days on standard and three to five on express, plus one to two business days of processing. A long weekend takes a day out of the count without warning.
Is the 407 free from Durham to Brampton?
Only the eastern part. Highway 407 East is toll-free from Brock Road in Pickering eastward, and the 412 and 418 are free, but west of Brock Road the privately operated 407 ETR is tolled the whole way across the top of Toronto. The free option for the full trip is the 401.
What happens if I am not home for the delivery?
The courier leaves a notice or attempts redelivery, which costs nothing. Do not refuse the parcel — refusing a delivery without prior notice carries a 75% restocking fee deducted from the refund. Shipping to a workplace is the simpler answer if the house is empty on weekdays.
Can I exchange a size?
Not directly. Return the eligible piece within seven days, unworn and tagged, take the store credit and place a new order. Pre-draped sarees, sarees with stitched blouses, bridal wear and customised pieces are outside returns entirely.
Which outfits are safe to buy without trying them on?
Palazzo sets, shararas and kurta sets, because the waist is drawn and the flare starts below the fit point. Lehengas, corset bodices and pre-draped sarees are the ones that want a fitting.
