Buying Indian Clothes in Hamilton and Burlington

Midnight navy pre-draped saree set with crystal blouse, photographed against a plain backdrop

MishUUU |

Hamilton and Burlington sit about an hour from the shops, and that is the whole problem. Far enough that a trip has to be planned, close enough that it feels unreasonable to pay for shipping. Most guides to buying Indian clothes in this part of Ontario are written as though the only question is what to wear. For anyone outside the Greater Toronto Area's retail belt, the first question is whether to make the drive at all — and that one has an arithmetic answer rather than a taste answer.

This page works through it with real numbers. If you want the garment-by-garment guides instead, buying a lehenga in Canada and buying a saree in Canada cover the two largest categories.

Why there is nothing to browse locally

Ontario's Indian and Pakistani occasion-wear retail is concentrated in a narrow belt — Brampton, Malton and north Mississauga, clustered along Steeles Avenue, Airport Road and Gore Road. Hamilton and Burlington are outside it. There are tailors, there are grocers, there are sari shops in the general sense, but the deep rail of current-season occasion wear that lets you try six lehengas in an afternoon is not sitting in Hamilton waiting for you.

So the real choice is between ordering to your door and making a deliberate trip. Both are reasonable. They are reasonable in different circumstances, and the circumstances are specific enough to write down.

The drive, and the cost nobody prices

From Hamilton the Brampton store at 2575 Steeles Avenue East, Unit 9 is roughly 60 kilometres; from Burlington, nearer 50. There are two ways to do it and they cost differently.

The quick way runs up the 403 and across the 407, which is a tolled road. The 407 bills by the kilometre, with the rate varying by time of day and by which section you are on, plus a per-trip charge on top. If you do not lease a transponder you are billed through the camera system instead, which carries its own charge per trip. For 2026 the personal transponder lease is $31.50 plus tax a year, which is only worth it if you are on the road regularly — for one shopping run, you are paying camera rates. Check the current schedule at 407etr.com before you go rather than finding out on the invoice.

The free way is the 403 to the 401 and up the 410, which costs nothing and takes longer, and in Friday afternoon traffic takes considerably longer.

Neither is expensive. The point is that the trip is not free, and people habitually compare a "free" drive against a shipping charge that is usually zero anyway. That comparison is backwards, and the next section is why.

The price band where the cheaper outfit costs you more

Here is the detail that actually changes a decision, and it comes from the shipping policy rather than from anything on a product page.

Standard shipping inside Canada is CAD $25, and free above CAD $125. Of the pieces currently active on this site, 569 of 742 are priced at $125 or above, which means that for roughly three-quarters of the catalogue the parcel already arrives at no charge. For those, driving to Brampton saves nothing on delivery. It buys you a fitting, and that is a genuine reason — but it is the only reason.

Below $125 the arithmetic inverts, and it inverts sharply. A $125 piece ships free and lands at $125. A $110 piece ships at $25 and lands at $135. Anything priced between about $100 and $125 costs you more delivered than something more expensive does. There is a dead band in the middle of the price list where paying less costs more, and almost nobody notices it because the shipping line appears at checkout after the decision has been made.

Three ways out of the band, in order of sensibility: add a second item and clear the threshold; choose the piece just above $125 instead, because you are paying the same total and getting more garment; or, if you are coming into Brampton anyway, buy the sub-$125 piece in person and let the trip pay for itself.

What the drive actually buys

One thing, and it is worth more than the shipping: a fitting.

The 7.6% of orders that come back are overwhelmingly a sizing problem, and the garment that drives it is the blouse. A skirt has ease, a drape has ease, a stitched blouse has none — bust, underbust, shoulder, armhole and back width all carried on one small piece with no surplus anywhere. Ordering a blouse to a chart is the single riskiest thing you can do on this catalogue, and it is riskiest in exactly the category you cannot return.

That matters more here than it would in Brampton, because a Hamilton buyer who orders wrong does not pop back. A size swap is a return, an inspection, a store credit and a fresh order — realistically two to three weeks, with return postage on you and no direct exchange available. On a wedding four weeks out, that is the whole runway.

So the rule for a Hamilton or Burlington buyer is narrower than the usual advice: order the pieces with ease, drive for the pieces without it. Palazzo sets, shararas, anarkalis and kurta sets have give through the body and go wrong gently. Fitted blouses, corset bodices and anything bridal do not.

What to order without worrying

Timing it from this side of the lake

Orders are processed in one to two business days and standard delivery runs four to six business days, so a parcel to Hamilton or Burlington is realistically a week to ten days from clicking. Express is CAD $29.99 flat at three to five business days.

Working backwards from a function: six weeks is comfortable, four weeks works, three weeks works if nothing needs altering, and under two weeks means driving up and buying what exists in your size. Ontario's wedding season runs November 2026 through February 2027, and pieces are stocked at a handful of units per size rather than in depth, so waiting generally costs you the size rather than the price.

One scheduling note specific to a day trip: the store is open eleven to eight, seven days a week, which makes a Sunday run possible when a weekday is not. Refunds are not processed at the store location, so do not combine the trip with returning a parcel.

Sizes, alterations and the things that are not reversible

Sizes run 3XS to XL depending on the piece, with custom sizing available on request. Custom sizing removes the return entirely, so it is the right answer for a body a chart does not fit and the wrong answer for uncertainty about which standard size to take. How to measure yourself covers the numbers, and plus size Indian clothes in Canada covers where the size run stops.

Standard-size kurta, palazzo and sharara sets are returnable within seven days of delivery, unworn and tagged, refunded as store credit with return postage on you. Bridal wear, customised pieces, pre-draped sarees, sarees with stitched blouses and Buy 1 Get 1 items are not. Alteration, petticoat, fall and pico, and pre-draping charges are non-refundable in every case — once the work is done, that money is spent whatever happens to the garment.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an Indian clothing store in Hamilton?

Not in the sense of a deep current-season occasion-wear rail. Ontario's occasion-wear retail is concentrated in Brampton, Malton and north Mississauga, about an hour up the road. For browsing, that is where the stock is.

Do you deliver to Hamilton and Burlington?

Yes. Standard shipping inside Canada is CAD $25 and free above CAD $125, arriving in four to six business days after one to two business days of processing. Express is CAD $29.99 flat at three to five business days.

Is it worth driving to Brampton?

For a fitting, yes — particularly for a blouse, a pre-draped saree, a corset bodice or anything bridal, none of which are returnable and all of which are hard to judge from a photograph. For a palazzo or kurta set over $125, no: it ships free and it fits forgivingly.

Does the 407 cost much from Hamilton?

It is tolled by distance and time of day with a per-trip charge, and billed through the camera system if you have no transponder. The 2026 personal transponder lease is $31.50 plus tax a year, which only pays off with regular use. The 403 and 401 through Mississauga are free and slower.

Why did my cheaper outfit cost more to deliver?

Because free shipping starts at CAD $125. A $110 piece plus $25 shipping lands at $135, while a $125 piece lands at $125. Anything between roughly $100 and $125 costs more delivered than something priced a little higher.

How far ahead should I order for a wedding?

Four to six weeks. That allows delivery, a fitting and any blouse adjustment, with room for a size swap if one is needed — and a swap is a return and a new order rather than an exchange, so it takes two to three weeks of its own.

Can I return something if it does not fit?

Standard-size pieces, yes, within seven days of delivery, unworn with tags intact, refunded as store credit with return postage on you. Pre-draped sarees, sarees with stitched blouses, bridal wear, customised pieces and Buy 1 Get 1 items are excluded.
