Indian Skirt Sets in Canada: Crop Top and Draped Skirt

Champagne gold draped skirt set with an embellished crop top and stitched front drape

MishUUU |

A skirt set is the piece people end up buying when a lehenga feels like too much and a saree feels like too much work. A crop top or bustier, a floor-length skirt with the drape already sewn into it, and usually a cape or a jacket instead of a dupatta. It photographs like a lehenga and it behaves like a dress.

It is also the hardest silhouette in the catalogue to find, and not because stock is thin. There are more than thirty of them in stock. The problem is that they are filed under four different names, and one of them is the reason most people never see half the range.

Read the title, not the URL

This is the practical instruction and it is worth putting first, because it costs nothing and it doubles what you see.

On several pieces the web address and the product name disagree about what the garment is. The Black Drape Skirt with Hand-Crafted Jacket at $165 has gown in its address. The Teal Embroidered Cape Draped Skirt Set at $155 has saree set in its address. The Mint Green Draped Skirt with Embellished Bustier and Cape at $170 has pant set in its address. All three are skirt sets, and all three are titled as such on the page.

So a site search for "skirt set" will miss them, and so will a Google search that leans on the URL. Search by what the piece looks like and read the product name, rather than filtering on the word. It is a small thing that materially changes how much of this range you actually get to choose from.

A skirt set is not a lehenga, and the difference is the waistband

These two get used interchangeably and they are not the same garment. The distinction that matters when something needs changing is where the volume is fixed.

  • A lehenga skirt gathers or pleats into a waistband with a drawstring or a zip. The fullness starts at the waist and hangs free. A tailor can take the waist in or let it out, and the skirt below is untouched.
  • A draped or pre-draped skirt has the fall stitched into the garment. The pleats, the front drape and often the sweep are sewn where they sit, as on the Midnight Blue Pre-Draped Skirt with Embellished Blouse and Sheer Cape at $125. Move the waist and you move the drape with it.

The consequence is concrete. On a draped skirt, the waist is the one measurement to get right, because it is the one a tailor cannot adjust without redesigning the front of the garment. Hip and length have more room; the waist does not. If you are between sizes, size up and have the side seams moved in, which is plain fabric and a straightforward job. Buying a lehenga in Canada covers the other construction, and alterations in Toronto covers what local tailors will take on.

Measure at the natural waist rather than where a pair of jeans sits, and add the ease you want to sit down in for four hours. The method is in the measuring guide and each piece carries its own chart; the size chart holds the conversions.

The one occasion piece you will wear again

Most Indian occasion wear comes apart into pieces that only work together. A lehenga choli is a matched set and the blouse rarely leaves the house on its own. A skirt set is the exception, and it is the strongest practical argument for the silhouette.

The top is a standalone garment. A bustier or an embellished crop top works with a plain black skirt, with wide-leg trousers, or with jeans for a dinner that is not a wedding. The Ivory Draped Skirt with Pastel Embellished Crop Top at $120 and the Hot Pink Drape Skirt Set with Handcrafted Crop Blouse at $125 both separate cleanly this way.

The cape and jacket versions give you a second variable instead. The Lilac Indo-Western Skirt Set with Embellished Jacket at $120 and the Radiant Red Draped Skirt with Embroidered Crop Top and Cape Jacket at $120 read as two different outfits with the layer on and off, which is the cheapest way to get a mehendi look and a reception look out of one purchase.

That matters more in Canada than it does elsewhere, because the wedding season here runs from November through February and the same guests appear at several functions. Reception outfits in Canada and engagement outfits in Canada cover the two ends of that calendar.

Three or four pieces, and the clock that follows from it

A skirt set usually arrives as three pieces and sometimes four: top, skirt, cape or jacket, occasionally a belt. That changes two things in the return policy that nobody checks until it is too late.

  • Clause 11.3 gives you 24 hours from delivery to report a missing item. Not seven days, which is the return window. Twenty-four hours. On a four-piece set that is the clause to care about, because a missing belt or cape is easy not to notice when the parcel lands on a Friday and the function is three weeks away. Open the box and count the pieces the day it arrives.
  • Clause 1 requires every tag and all original packaging intact for a return to be eligible. On a multi-piece set that means keeping the tags on all of it, including the layer you were never going to wear.

One piece of good news that follows from the construction: clause 1.2 excludes sarees with stitched blouses from returns, and clause 1.4 excludes pre-draped sarees. A skirt set is neither, even when its web address says "saree set", because the top is a separate garment and the skirt is not a saree. A standard-size skirt set is returnable on the normal terms: seven days to initiate, seven more to post it back, store credit rather than a card refund, return postage at your cost, and no exchanges at all under clause 9. In practice a size swap is a two-to-three-week round trip, which is the argument for the waist measurement rather than the optimism.

Custom sizing is available across the range and makes the piece non-returnable under clause 1.3. Custom sizing in Canada covers the lead times.

What a Canadian winter does to a stitched drape

Two things are specific to this silhouette rather than general winter advice, which the winter wedding guide already covers.

  • A stitched drape cannot be lifted out of the slush. A loose dupatta or an unpleated saree can be gathered over an arm crossing a car park. A sewn front drape sits where it sits, so the hem takes the road salt. Brush it off while it is damp rather than letting it dry into the embroidery thread, which stiffens and eventually cuts it.
  • The cape version solves the coat problem. A cape or jacket layer over a bustier means you are not bare-shouldered the moment the coat comes off, which is the single most common February complaint about this silhouette.

Sizes, and where the range actually stops

Size runs vary by piece. Several of the draped skirt sets start lower than usual at XXS, including the Tangerine Mirror Embroidered Lehenga Skirt Set at $120. The Teal Embroidered Cape Draped Skirt Set at $155 runs up to 2XL. Others stop at L, so the size selector on the individual product page is the only reliable answer. Plus size buying covers which silhouettes hold their shape at the wider end of the range.

Where to start looking

There is no collection called "skirt sets", which is the other half of the findability problem. They sit across Indo-Western Outfits, Lehenga for the pieces filed as lehenga skirts, Wedding Reception for the evening register, and Corsets for the structured bustier tops. Two smaller edits worth a look because they are easy to miss: Fusion and Hidden Gems.

On price, most of the range sits between $120 and $170. The Champagne Gold Draped Skirt Set and the Blush Embellished Cape Drape Skirt Ensemble are both $120; the Lilac Sequin Crop Top and Draped Skirt Set with Net Cape at $165 is the heavier end. If the one-garment version appeals more than the separates, Indian gowns and saree gowns in Canada covers that.

If you are in the GTA, the waist measurement is the reason to try one on rather than order and hope. The Brampton store is at 2575 Steeles Avenue East, Unit 9.

Common questions

What is the difference between a skirt set and a lehenga?

A lehenga skirt gathers into a waistband and hangs free, so the waist can be altered without touching the skirt. A draped skirt set has the pleats and front drape stitched into the garment, so the waist is fixed by the design. The lehenga is more alterable; the skirt set needs less managing on the day.

Is a skirt set returnable in Canada?

Yes, in a standard size. Initiate within seven days of delivery and post it back within seven days of approval, unworn with every tag and all packaging intact. Refunds are store credit rather than a card refund and return postage is yours. Custom-sized pieces are not returnable.

Can a draped skirt be taken in at the waist?

Only a little, and it is the alteration to avoid. The drape is stitched to the waistband, so moving the waist moves the front of the garment. Size up and have the side seams taken in instead, which is plain fabric. Alteration charges are non-refundable under clause 5.5.

Why can I not find skirt sets when I search the site?

Because several have "gown", "saree set" or "pant set" in their web address even though the product name says skirt set. Browse by look and read the product name rather than filtering on the word.

How many pieces does a skirt set come with?

Usually three — top, skirt and cape or jacket — and sometimes four with a belt. Count them the day the parcel arrives: clause 11.3 gives you 24 hours from delivery to report a missing item, which is a much shorter clock than the seven-day return window.

Can I wear the top again on its own?

That is the main argument for the silhouette. An embellished crop top or bustier works with a plain skirt, wide-leg trousers or jeans, which is not true of a lehenga choli. The cape and jacket versions give you two looks from one purchase instead.
