Indian Groomsmen and Baraat Outfits in Canada

Men's scarlet red kurta set with antique gold motif embroidery, the kind of single style a groomsmen group can be dressed from

MishUUU |

There is a page on this site for the father of the bride or groom, one for men attending as guests, and one for buying a kurta pajama on its own. None of them is written for the group of six or eight men standing either side of the groom, and that group has a different problem from all three.

A guest dresses himself. A father dresses for a long day and a handful of photographs. Groomsmen have to look like a set — which means a sourcing problem before it is a styling one — and they are the only people at the wedding who will spend part of it physically working.

What a groomsman's day actually involves

Write the day out and the clothing decisions make themselves.

You arrive early. You are outside with the baraat for thirty to forty-five minutes, on foot, dancing in front of a slow-moving car. You carry things: the groom's shoes, a garland, sometimes the groom himself onto someone's shoulders. At a Hindu wedding you are up and down off the mandap floor; at a Sikh ceremony you are seated cross-legged on the floor of the darbar sahib with your head covered. Then you stand in a receiving line, then you are the first people on the dance floor because somebody has to be.

That is a physical day in formal clothes, and almost nothing written about Indian wedding menswear acknowledges it. The two pages worth reading alongside this one are what to wear to a Sikh wedding in Canada and the Hindu ceremony, both of which cover the floor and the head covering in more detail.

The joota chupai problem

Here is the specific one, and it is not a joke even though it sounds like one. On the groom's side, the groomsmen are responsible for the groom's shoes, and the bride's sisters and cousins are responsible for taking them. That is a scramble, on the floor, in socks, usually in a corridor or a side room, and it happens in the middle of the day with the whole outfit on.

Two consequences follow. Pale trousers are the wrong choice for this role specifically — a venue floor at hour five is not clean, and an ivory churidar at the knee will show it for the rest of the evening. And a floor-length kurta with a low side slit is the worst possible garment to kneel or move quickly in. A kurta that falls to mid-thigh or just above the knee, in a mid or deep tone, with a higher slit, survives the day in a way an ivory floor-length one does not. Keep the ivory for the groom, who is not going to be on the floor fighting for his own shoes.

Dressing a group from one style, which is usually not possible

This is the part that decides whether a group order works at all, and it is a stock question rather than a taste question.

Occasion wear is normally held one or two units per size. On that depth, dressing six men in mixed sizes from one style is arithmetic that does not work — you buy four of the style and two near-matches, and the near-matches are visible in every photograph taken from more than a few feet away.

The men's range here is currently held differently. Counted from the catalogue on 14 October 2026, the autumn styles run XS to 4XL at three units per size, which is roughly twenty-one garments per style. On that depth a group of six to eight in mixed sizes can genuinely be dressed from a single style, in the same colour and the same embroidery, from stock. That is unusual, and it is the practical reason this page exists rather than a general one about coordinating.

It also means the extended sizes are not an obstacle for a group. 39 of the 41 active men's sets carry 2XL, 3XL and 4XL, all at CAD $105, so the one friend who has been sized out of every groomsmen set he has ever been part of is not the reason the group has to split across two styles. Plus size Indian clothes in Canada has the category counts if that matters to your group.

The fit that matters for this role, and it is not the chest

Shoulder, and then arm lift

Chest is forgiving on a kurta, because the body is cut straight and loose and an inch disappears into the drape. The shoulder is not. The seam should sit at the point of the shoulder; once it drops onto the upper arm the whole garment reads as borrowed, and taking the sides in does not fix it because the sides are not the problem.

For groomsmen there is a second test the other pages do not need. Raise both arms above your head in it. That is the baraat, the lift, and four hours of a dance floor. If the armhole binds at full extension, that is the day. An armhole on an embroidered kurta cannot be enlarged afterwards — the yoke is worked to the seam and there is no allowance to open — so this is a decision made at the point of ordering. Between sizes, take the larger and have the side seams brought in; alterations in Toronto and Brampton covers the turnaround on that.

Where the embroidery should not be

Dense work across the shoulder and yoke is the usual place to put it, and for this role it is the wrong place twice over. It is the area that takes the most movement, so metallic threadwork there flexes all day and dulls at the fold lines. It is also where a garland sits, and where a shoulder takes weight if the groom goes up.

Work on the chest, the placket and the cuffs does none of that and photographs just as well, because a photograph of a group is taken from the front. The Burnt Orange Silver Embroidered Kurta Ensemble sits in that register, with the detail concentrated at the collar and cuffs rather than across the shoulders.

The baraat is outdoors, and in Canada that is the whole problem

Ontario wedding season runs November to February. A baraat in that window is thirty to forty-five minutes outside, moving, in single digits or below.

The thing nobody says plainly: a coat is not an option for the groomsmen, because the baraat is the most photographed part of the day and a group of men in winter coats is not the picture anyone wants. Guests can wear a coat from the car and take it off inside. Groomsmen are outside for the part that gets filmed.

So the only layer that works is one that reads as part of the outfit rather than over it, which in this category means a waistcoat or a Nehru jacket. The Ivory Silver Geometric Nehru Jacket Kurta Set, the Ivory Silver Ornate Nehru Jacket Kurta Set and the Ivory Yellow Silver Nehru Jacket Kurta Set all come as jacket-and-kurta sets at $105, and the Sand Beige Brooch Men's Waistcoat Kurta Set is the lighter version of the same idea. A jacket also solves the garland: it takes the marigold and comes off after the photographs, which is the only way to wear anything pale on a day with fresh flowers in it.

Two smaller ones from the same forty-five minutes. Mojris are indoor shoes and their soles mark permanently on wet pavement, so wear real shoes for the baraat and change inside — which most of a GTA baraat is quietly already doing. And a thermal base layer under the kurta is invisible and changes the day completely; Indian wedding outfits for a Canadian winter goes further into fabric.

Colour, which has three constraints rather than one

Groomsmen colour is usually treated as a matching exercise. It is really a set of exclusions.

  • Not the groom's colour, and not his weight of work. The group exists to frame him. Two or three tonal steps away from whatever he is wearing is enough; an ivory group around an ivory groom reads as a mistake rather than a theme.
  • Not the bride's side's chosen colour either. This requires one phone call that almost nobody makes, and it is the only outfit decision in the day involving another household.
  • Daylight and hall light are not the same. Antique gold deepens under the 2,700K to 3,000K of a banquet hall and can read brassy in open November daylight; silver holds true in both. Since the baraat is outdoors and the reception is not, a group outfit is seen under both in one day — which is an argument for silver work if the group is photographed heavily outside.

Mid and deep tones do the most work for this role, for the floor reason above as much as the colour one. The Deep Forest Green Tonal Men's Kurta Set, the Deep Teal Rust Botanical Men's Kurta Set and the Charcoal Black Antique Gold Floral Kurta Set all sit there. For a daytime function, the Antique Ochre Gold Heritage Men's Kurta Set and the Antique Mustard Silver Men's Kurta Set are cut for haldi and mehendi light. And in the quieter neutral register, the Stone Sage Antique Gold Floral Kurta Set, the Stone Grey Antique Gold Heritage Kurta Set, the Smoky Grey Rose Gold Motif Kurta Set and the Sand Beige Rust Botanical Men's Kurta Set.

Ordering for a group, practically

Three units per size is deep for one style and shallow across six people buying separately over a fortnight. So:

  • Place one order, not six. Collect everyone in, then buy. A style that can dress eight men on Monday can dress five by Friday.
  • Collect shoulder measurements, not shirt sizes. Nobody knows their shoulder measurement off the top of their head, which is exactly why this is the step that gets skipped and the reason half a group ends up in the wrong size. The size chart and the measuring guide have the method; it takes two minutes per person.
  • Build in four weeks. One to two business days to dispatch, four to six business days standard shipping, and two to three weeks if anything needs altering. Three weeks is workable; under two means buying what already exists in everyone's size.
  • Know the return terms before you commit a group. A standard-size set is returnable within seven days, unworn and tagged, for store credit with return postage on you, and there are no direct exchanges — so a wrong size is realistically a two-to-three-week round trip. Custom sizing is excluded from returns entirely. The detail is in the return policy.

If the group is in the Greater Toronto Area, this is the category where coming in together is worth the trip. The Brampton store at 2575 Steeles Avenue East, Unit 9, is open 11:00 to 20:00 seven days a week, and eight shoulder measurements taken in one visit removes most of what goes wrong. Where to buy Indian clothes in Toronto and the GTA covers the wider area.

Questions people ask

Should groomsmen match exactly or coordinate?

Either works, and the honest answer is that it usually depends on stock rather than preference. Matching from one style is possible here because the autumn men's sets are held at three units per size across seven sizes. If you are buying from a rail held one deep per size, coordinate within a tonal family instead — four near-matches of the same style look like a sourcing accident, while four deliberately different pieces in the same tones do not.

What should groomsmen wear for the baraat in a Canadian winter?

A kurta set with a Nehru jacket or waistcoat, a thermal base layer underneath, and real shoes for the outdoor part with mojris changed into inside. A coat is not usable, because the baraat is the most filmed thirty minutes of the day.

Can groomsmen wear ivory?

They can, but it is the hardest colour for this particular role. Fresh garlands sit on the shoulder and run on pale fabric, and the shoe scramble happens on a venue floor. If the group wants ivory, a jacket that takes the garland and comes off afterwards is the way to do it.

How far in advance should a group order?

Four weeks is comfortable and three is workable. The constraint is not shipping, it is that a single style has finite depth — so the earlier the whole group orders together, the more likely everyone is in the same piece.

Do you have groomsmen sets above XL?

Yes. 39 of the 41 active men's sets carry 2XL, 3XL and 4XL at $105, so a mixed-size group does not have to split across styles. Above 4XL, custom sizing is available on request, though a custom piece is excluded from returns.

Do you carry sherwanis for a groom?

Not at present. The men's range is kurta sets, including Nehru-jacket and waistcoat sets. A kurta set will not stand in for a full sherwani, and it is better to know that before planning the groom's outfit around this rail — though the groomsmen around him are exactly what this range is for.

What does a groomsmen set cost?

The men's range is CAD $105 a set, including the coordinated trousers. Standard shipping inside Canada is CAD $25 and free above CAD $125, so a group order ships free.
