Being pregnant through a wedding season is common enough that every family has done it, and still almost nothing written about Indian occasion wear allows for it. The advice assumes a body that will be the same size on the day of the order as on the day of the function. When you are expecting, it will not be, and that single fact changes which garments are worth buying, when to buy them, and which ones you should not buy at all.

The problem is timing, not size
Every other buying guide on this site says the same thing about fit: measure carefully, order to your largest measurement, have it taken in. That advice rests on the measurements staying put. In pregnancy the bust, underbust and waist can all change noticeably inside a few weeks, and not at a rate anyone can predict for you precisely.
So the useful question is not "what size am I" but "what size will I be on the day, and how much does this garment forgive if I guess wrong". Garments sort cleanly on that second question, and it is the one that should decide the purchase.
Three numbers to take, and when
- Bust, taken at the fullest point, in the bra you will wear on the day. This is the measurement that moves most, and it is the one a fitted blouse cannot recover from.
- Underbust. This is where an empire-line or anarkali bodice actually sits, so on the garments that suit pregnancy best it matters more than the waist.
- Front length from shoulder to floor, over the bump, in the shoes you will wear. The bump takes up length at the front. A floor-length hem that is correct at the back can sit two or three centimetres high at the front, and nobody thinks of it until the photographs.

What forgives, and what does not
Anarkalis: the obvious answer, for a mechanical reason
An anarkali is fitted from the shoulder to just under the bust and then flares. Nothing below the underbust is load-bearing, so the bump sits inside the flare rather than against a seam, and a change in waist measurement over the following weeks costs nothing. Kaftans: the most forgiving silhouette in the store
A kaftan has no fitted point below the shoulders at all. It is the one garment that will fit on the day whatever happened in the six weeks before, which makes it the safest order when the function is some way off. Palazzo and kurta sets: good above, check the waistband
A longline kurta over wide-leg trousers is comfortable and easy to sit in, and it suits a long function. The top is rarely the problem. The trouser waistband is, because it sits exactly where the bump is. A drawstring or elasticated waist adjusts; a fixed waistband does not. Ask before ordering. Lehengas: possible, with one trade-off to decide in advance
A lehenga skirt can be worn with the waistband below the bump, which many women do. The consequence is at the top: a standard choli ends at the underbust, so wearing the skirt low leaves the bump bare between the two. Some women want that. If you do not, the answer is a longer blouse or a jacket layer, and it has to be chosen at purchase, not solved on the night with a dupatta. The Lehengas collection shows the lengths available.
The two to avoid
Corset pieces. A boned bodice works by compression and is cut to a single circumference, with about an inch of alteration either way. That is the opposite of what a changing body needs. The corset guide explains the construction.
Pre-draped sarees. This is the counter-intuitive one, because an unstitched saree is arguably the most pregnancy-friendly garment ever designed: the pleats are tucked, and the tuck moves wherever you need it. A pre-draped saree is the reverse. The pleats are sewn to a waistband of fixed size, so a changing waist has nowhere to go. It is also excluded from returns under the return policy. A garment that cannot adjust and cannot go back is the worst possible purchase for a body that is still changing.
The returns and custom-size arithmetic
Standard-size kurta sets, anarkalis, shararas and lehengas can be returned within seven days of delivery, unworn and tagged, for store credit, with return postage on you. There are no direct exchanges, so a size change means a return and a new order, realistically two to three weeks.
Custom sizing looks like the answer for pregnancy and is often the wrong one. A customised piece is non-returnable, and a non-Ready-to-Ship order can only be cancelled within 24 hours of placing it. You would be locking in a measurement that is, by definition, still moving. Custom makes sense only late, close to the date, on a garment that is fitted above the bump rather than across it. The practical ordering rule follows from all of this. If the function is more than six weeks away, buy a forgiving silhouette in a standard size now. If it is inside four weeks, measure on the day, order, and allow for delivery: one to two business days of processing, then four to six business days of standard shipping inside Canada, free above CAD $125.
The Canadian part: ice, heat and the long evening
Set the hem to flat shoes. Between November and February the walk from a banquet-hall car park is ice and salt, and many women who are expecting wear flats for the whole evening rather than changing at the door. A hem set for heels will drag by the height of the heel. Decide the shoe before the hem is set.
Dress for the warm end of the hall. GTA banquet halls run hot on the dance floor and cool near the doors. Pregnancy tends to make the warm end feel warmer. A breathable single layer with a light jacket or dupatta you can take off does better than one heavy embellished piece. What is the best Indian outfit to wear to a wedding while pregnant?
An anarkali or a kaftan-style set. Both are fitted only above the bump, so a change in waist size between ordering and the day costs nothing. Avoid corset bodices and pre-draped sarees, which are cut to a fixed waist.
Can I wear a lehenga while pregnant?
Yes, usually with the skirt worn below the bump. Decide at purchase whether you want a longer blouse or a jacket to close the gap between the choli and the skirt, because a dupatta will not do it reliably all evening.
